Financial aid is a source of monetary support in the form of loans, grants, scholarships and employment offered for the specific purpose of helping a student meet educationally related expenses.

Florida International University and the College of Engineering and Computing offer a number of financial aid opportunities to assist our students in reaching their educational goals. Each financial assistance program varies in terms of eligibily requirements and award amount.

Merit - based financial aid (Scholarships, Fellowships, Assistantships)
Florida International University and the College of Engineering and Computing offer a number of financial aid opportunities based on academic performance, to assist our students in reaching their educational goals. These opportunities are highly competitive, merit-based, may be available to international students, and include:

Scholarships
Fellowships
Tution Waivers
Research Assistanships
Teaching Assistantships

Each merit-based program varies in terms of eligibily requirements and award amount.

Federal and State Financial Aid
The federal and state governments are the largest source of financial aid for domestic students. International students are not eligible for either federal or state aid. Aid is available for graduate and undergraduate students, and may be awarded based on financial need and/or academic accomplishment.

Federal and State Aid can take the form of:

Grants
Student Employment / Workstudy programs
Scholarships
Federal Loans
Florida Pre-Paid Tuition program

To apply for federal or state financial aid, you must first complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. You can complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. From the information submitted, the U.S. Department of Education determines how much aid you should receive and notifies the University. When applying, use FIU institution code "009635".

Institutional need-based aid

Graduate Fee Grants
Awarded by the Financial Aid office to students who have financial need. It pays up to $2,500 per semester. In order to be considered, students must complete a form at FIU's Financial Aid office.Monies will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. International students are not eligible for these awards. Students must be enrolled on a full-time basis.

Education Loans

Eligible students may finance their studies through educational loans, which must be repaid to the lender.

The Federal government offers a number of loan programs for eligible students and their parents. International students are not eligible for these programs. These loans may be subsidized and/or guaranteed by government agencies.

Perkins Loans

Federal Stafford Loans
PLUS Loans
Federal Direct Loan Program

Private loans are also available from a variety of sources, including financial institutions, employers and professional associations. Many students also resort to personal loans to fund their education by tapping into credit cards, home equity, lines of credit, etc.

FIU also offers short term loans to assist degree-seeking students in covering their tuition and fees in case of unforeseen emergencies or short-term need. These loans must be repaid within 45 calendar days. For more information, click here.
