| The College of Engineering and Computing at FIU
has created a special Faculty Development program
for active engineering professors seeking to obtain
an advanced Ph.D. degree in one of the engineering
disciplines offered by the College. The program is
open to faculty from institutions of higher education
in foreign countries that are members of LACCEI. |
|
| The Latin
American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering
Institutions (LACCEI) is an organization
devoted to establishing long-term relationships between
institutions of higher education that have demonstrated
interest in Latin America in the areas of education,
research and technology development. |

Admission Requirements
Faculty members applying to this program should be
able to satisfy all admission requirements to the
desired program of study. In addition, applicants
must be sponsored by their home institution and should
hold a continuing appointment. The sponsoring institution
may be required to sign a contract with FIU detailing
the academic, administrative and financial responsibilities
of FIU and the sponsoring institution. |
| |
Financial support
Admitted Ph.D. students sponsored through the Faculty
Development program will be awarded a graduate teaching
or research assistantship. As graduate assistants,
students receive a tuition waiver, and are required
to work in order to receive stipends of up to $15,000
per year. While at FIU, foreign faculty is encouraged
to engage in classroom lectures and teaching of regular
courses. This will provide them with the opportunity
of having taught in a major U.S. institution, a valuable
addition to their professional curriculum. |
| |
Time limitations
Students in this program are required to complete
the required course work and pass the qualifying
examination for the desired Doctoral degree program
within two (2) to three (3) semesters at FIU. After
passing the qualifying examination, the sponsored
students are expected to select a research topic,
a dissertation advisor, and then return to their
home institution to pursue their dissertation research.
It is imperative for the home institution to provide
a reduced teaching load and research support to the
student through this period. |
